Best questions for an informational interview
Comments Off on Best questions for an informational interview

We encourage our students (and other job seekers) to start with informational interviews before they start their job search. This can help by giving you inside information about a company and/or a career that you would not otherwise know.

There are many alumni from your school who would love to give you a few minutes of their time to teach you more about their job, their company and/or their career path. This gives them a way to give back to their alma mater, and gives you a glimpse into a role that you might like to pursue in the future.

The question we often get, is how do I start the conversation? Here are a few questions to get you started.

  1. How did you decide to work at ABC Company?
  2. What is your average day like?
  3. How did your degree help you prepare for this job?
  4. Did your other jobs before this help you? Why or why not?
  5. What do you think was the best thing you did to prepare you for your current job? What specific skills are required?
  6. What degree (and/or classes) would you say would be the best preparation for the job you have today?
  7. What type of job experience (or internship experience) would you say is the best preparation for the job you have today?
  8. What other suggestions do you have for someone like me who is interested in pursuing a career such as yours?
  9. Finally, are there any other people who you think would be beneficial for me to meet?
  10. Thank you for your time today!

Let us know if you think of others so that we can share them with our students and others in our Trust Network!
