Today, Karen has been invited to share insights from her recent book in a lunch & learn at the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business at Campbell University during its Business Week celebration.

First, she will encourage students to think about how they can get the most out of their college experience. What clubs can they join that will help them learn more about the future career they are interested in? What volunteer activities will help them develop their team and/or leadership skills? What guest speakers will introduce them to interesting alumni and/or new companies?

Next, she will focus on interviewing tips. This is a topic that students (and alumni) frequently come to her for help. Her tips include how to prepare for an interview (both personally and learning about the company), as well as asking good questions during the interview. The WSJ this week had a good article about how to handle challenging interview questions. We always encourage students to follow up with a solid thank you note as well. This article from the ladders has advice on how to write a solid thank you note. This is an overlooked item that can set you apart from the competition.

Finally, she will address the topic of internships. Paid vs. unpaid internships has been a controversial topic, but there are many creative ways you can go about finding the internship you want and/or need. She will share some of our favorite tips for finding a job and/or an internship including using your Trust Network and conducting informational interviews. Here is a list of questions you can ask during your informational interviews.

What tips do you have for college students who are looking for internships and jobs? We’d love for you to share them here.
