John Chapman is a former EMBA student of mine from Wake Forest University with whom I have kept in touch. As someone who is interested in green technologies and their application to residential homes, I am pleased to share this information about his new firm.
Environmental Solutions Group (ESG) was formed in 2000 as an environmental health & safety consulting firm. Several years later, in 2005, we began adding personnel with expertise in energy use analysis and sustainable building. The market was still new at that time and that side of the business grew very slowly. In 2009, with the economy somewhat stabilized and homebuilders becoming active once again, we experienced a large increase in interest and revenue from energy analysis and green building projects. In late 2009, we formed a separate LLC, ESG Energy, primarily to brand the energy-related side of the business without giving up the ESG name. In June 2010, ESG Energy introduced its Carbon Footprint Reduction Program, the first program in the U.S. that certifies organizations for achievement in reducing their corporate carbon footprint.
What services does ESG Energy provide?
We provide residential & commercial property owners and building contractors with energy use analysis and provide suggestions for improvement. We have been certifying properties through the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Homes program and NAHB’s Green Building Standard for three years, and have completed over one thousand energy or green audits of buildings. Recently, we added a unique certification program for organizations that verifies a reduction in their carbon emissions, otherwise known as the carbon footprint. ESG Energy also provides the organization with assistance in how to reduce their carbon emissions, which will ultimately save the organization money. In the end, the certification will more than pay for itself.
There must be a lot of energy ‘experts’ vying for this kind of work. What distinguishes ESG Energy?
There are people who have entered the marketplace in the last twelve months or so, and many more will do so in the next twelve months. ESG brings a proven track record and the credibility that comes with having certified hundreds of properties under well-established standards for energy efficient construction. We also have the depth of knowledge that comes from the environmental health side, as there is nothing smart about reducing energy use by tightening up a building and finding that the occupants are getting sick from a chemical that used to exhaust out of the ‘holes’ that were plugged to save energy. We look at the whole building to include the occupants, and educate management on down about their role in making their building energy efficient and a safe place to work.
What results have you achieved for your clients?
Until recently, the majority of ESG Energy’s clients were building contractors. They paid us to guide them through the process of building energy efficient buildings and to verify that the building meets a certain government or industry standard for energy efficiency. The contractors with whom we work are having success in selling homes as buyers name energy efficiency high on the list of ‘wants’. Of course, this is a good thing for the United States as reducing energy use will reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Heating and cooling of our buildings consumes approximately 50% of all the energy used by the U.S., so even small improvements can have a large impact. On a smaller scale, our clients have found that the energy education provided to their organization helps them achieve the necessary ‘buy-in’ from everyone in the company. When every employee is engaged in the process, the savings can be significant.
Who recommends you?
We receive a lot of referrals from our client base (i.e., builders, commercial property owners & homeowners), but also from attorneys, property and facility mangers, realtors and medical doctors who have patients with environmental sensitivities. The broad referral network and client base has helped us weather the slow economy well.
